New Delhi: Prime Minister Narendra Modi has urged India to strengthen its presence in water sports, winter sports and other Olympic disciplines, stressing the need to make better use of the country’s vast coastline and mountainous regions.
Speaking at the ‘Khelo India Dialogue’, PM Modi said India has traditionally participated in only a limited number of Olympic sports and needs to identify new areas where the country can develop world-class athletes.
Focus on New Olympic Sports
PM Modi highlighted surfing and sport climbing as examples of disciplines where India has significant potential.
“We have a huge coastline and vast mountainous regions. From water sports to winter sports, we have the demography and geography,” he said.
He called for stronger infrastructure, training facilities and a sporting ecosystem to help athletes compete in these disciplines.
Talent Hunt for Young Athletes
The Prime Minister also reiterated India’s ambition to host the 2036 Olympics and announced plans for a nationwide talent hunt.
The initiative will focus on identifying sporting talent among children aged 5 to 15 years across villages, cities and schools.
PM Modi said India will particularly focus on sports where the country currently has limited participation or qualification.
India is also set to host the 2030 Commonwealth Games, providing another opportunity to strengthen its sporting infrastructure and identify future champions.
