Just 14 minutes and 24 seconds long, director Sumit Kumar Ray’s short film Shudhui Bishwastota (Only Fidelity) leaves audiences with questions that linger long after the credits roll. The film has earned appreciation and an award at the Durgapur International Film Festival (DIFF-2026).
Starring Akanksha, Rijhu, Kajal Chowdhury, Irani Mukherjee, Deepti and Sujata, the film explores the complex intersection of relationships, individual freedom and social expectations. Sayan has handled the cinematography, while Abhijit is credited with the editing.
The story revolves around Rick and Purba, whose lives take an unexpected turn after they arrive in Kolkata in search of work and circumstances lead them into an unusual living arrangement. Through a conversation between Purba and Ella Aunty, the disturbing story of Malati, a homemaker, gradually comes to light. Her desire to work and become financially independent ultimately leads to brutal abuse at the hands of her husband.
However, Shudhui Bishwastota goes beyond portraying a single case of violence against a woman. The film raises deeper questions about the boundaries of authority within marriage, a woman’s right to choose her own future, and the ways patriarchal attitudes, ego and controlling behaviour can turn a relationship into a source of violence.
By addressing the sensitive issue of domestic violence, the short film encourages viewers to rethink the meaning of relationships, equality, independence and fidelity.
The appreciation and award received at the Durgapur International Film Festival have added another significant milestone to the journey of Shudhui Bishwastota, highlighting its ability to engage audiences with a socially relevant and thought-provoking subject.
